The Great Grimsby
Slipway Company
Built over 60 years ago, the slipways at Grimsby are in full operation, the facilities offered consisting of two slipways, the largest slipway cradle having a capacity of 1200 tons. To accommodate vessels requiring long term work dumb berths are available via a transfer system off the main cradle system.
The ownership of the slipways has also seen several changes in recent years. In 1989, The Great Grimsby Slipways Company was formed, and took over operation of the slipways under lease from Associated British Ports (ABP). With the formation of Grimsby Fish Dock Enterprises Limited, the lease passed to the consortium responsible for the modernisation of the Fish Docks - in which The Great Grimsby Slipway Company is a shareholder!
The Great Grimsby Slipway Company is made up of local companies, and run by a Board of Directors under the chairmanship of Dave Johnson. The hire of the slipways and the movement of vessels is controlled by Company Secretary, John McLellan and is assistant Alan Riley, the slipway operator. The company runs in tandem with Grimsby Ship Repairers Association sharing the common interest of attracting trade to the port of Grimsby.
The present trading area of the slipway company is expanding nationwide through active marketing. Its main expertise being in the repair and refurbishment of all types of vessels including tugs, workboats and fishing vessels.
A comprehensive engineering and ship repairing service is available 24 hours a day.
