ABOUT GRIMSBY FISH MARKET

Grimsby Fish MarkeT

Grimsby is recognised as being one of the most important wholesale fish markets, not just in the UK, but also in Europe.

The dominant supply of fresh fish to the market is from Iceland and Norway but also it attracts fish supplies from across the UK & Europe. The large number of primary processors, ancillary service providers, cold storage and easy access to the UK motorway network keep Grimsby at the forefront of the UK Fish trade.

Daily Activity

Between 6pm and 9pm fish starts to arrive from either the local container port of Immingham or from the various ports around the country.

Much of the fish arrives ungraded in insulated tubs and requires onshore grading, packing and weighing. The Grimsby Fish market utilises 3 Marel grading machines and for larger sizes a team of trained staff grade the fish by hand. Fish is typically packed into 50 kilo boxes. Staff load 8 boxes onto pallets and these are moved into the chilled auction Hall ready for the next day’s sale.

From 6am, Monday to Friday, sellers and registered buyers start to arrive at the Fish Market so they can start to check out the day’s fish. At 7am the shout auction starts and buyers bid on the fish. Normally buyers are purchasing at least 1 pallet (400kg) at a time and on a typical Monday auction with 125 tonnes of fish the sales can be finished within 45 minutes.
